A "regular" O-ring is typically made from nitrile rubber, while a Viton O-ring is made from a specialized fluorocarbon rubber, offering significantly better resistance to high temperatures, harsh chemicals, and weathering, making Viton O-rings ideal for applications with extreme conditions, while regular O-rings are better for more standard uses where cost is a primary concern; Viton O-rings are generally more expensive than regular O-rings.
